I met Margaret when Paul and I moved in next door to her and Frank in Whitecroft in December 2003. At first we were just neighbourly, saying hello across the fence but soon a quick hello in the garden moved to Frank, Margaret, Paul and I having longer conversations across the fence.
When Frank became ill Paul and I became closer with Margaret, we kept up to date on when she was visiting Frank in hospital so on several occasions Paul would call her on her mobile and say we were popping to Gloucester shopping just so we could tie it in and give her a lift home, often collecting Fish and Chips for her on the way back. We never were going to Gloucester shopping we told a ‘white lie’ so that we could give her a lift home. Margaret was very independent and head strong and we knew she wouldn’t want to put us out so we thought those white lies were necessary. I never did tell her we made our shopping trips up.
When Frank sadly passed away Margaret and I became closer as neighbours and friends. Most weekends, usually on a Friday after work I would pop around for a sherry, occasionally Margaret would have a sherry but she generally preferred her fiery ginger ale. We’d talk about all sorts of topics and have a good laugh along the way.
Margaret and Paul shared the same sense of humour if someone walked by and the two of them were having a chat over the fence you could mistake it for an argument, they both shared a sarcastic form of banter and they played that off each other and it was always amusing to listen to.
Despite the age gap between us I considered her a dear friend and both Paul and I are very saddened by her passing. Our heart goes out to David who has given up everything he had abroad to come home to care for her in such a compassionate and loving way to ensure that she was able to stay at home to the end as was her wish.
Rest in Peace Margaret, You’ll never be forgotten, I will treasure our conversations over a sherry and the friendly banter you and Paul shared and don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on David for you.
